Microsoft releases Zoo Tycoon Friends, a free-to-play app for Windows Phone and soon for Windows 8.1

Back in July, Microsoft unveiled Zoo Tycoon Friends, a new free-to-play app that will launch on Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone. The app has been developed by Doritos Crash Course studio Behavior Interactive and is similar to the Xbox 360 and Xbox One versions of the title, which launched last year.

The game features simplified, cartoon-like visuals, as well as one in-game currency to buy with real world money. Similar to the Xbox versions of Zoo Tycoon, gameplay will revolve around interacting with animals and building your zoo. However, instead of using the Kinect sensor, you will be utilizing touch controls to take care of your animals.

The game will also feature Xbox Live support so you can earn achievements and sync your progress across devices. Check out the game play footage of Zoo Tycoon Friends below. You can also hit the download link to snag the game. It is not yet downloadable for Windows 8.1, but should be available soon.

Update: If you were lucky enough to snag the game earlier today, congrats, because it has been pulled for now. Here’s what a Microsoft spokesperson told WinBeta:

Zoo Tycoon Friends was briefly made available in the marketplace for Windows Phone customers to download and play for a short period while testing.  The game is available in select markets only as it completes certification.  We look forward to bringing Zoo Tycoon Friends to Windows 8.1 phones, tablets and PCs very soon.
