A court in Mannheim Germany ruled that Microsoft was no longer allowed to sell its popular Xbox 360 entertainment console and Windows 7 operating system and needed to remove them from the German market, due to patent infringement with Motorola.

According to Microsoft, the ruling does mean that these products would be taken off retail shelves due to a court in Seattle allowing Microsoft a preliminary injunction against Motorola that allows the company to avoid the German court order from being enforced by Motorola. “This is one step in a long process, and we are confident that Motorola will eventually be held to its promise to make its standard essential patents available on fair and reasonable terms for the benefit of consumers who enjoy video on the web. Motorola is prohibited from acting on today’s decision, and our business in Germany will continue as usual while we appeal this decision and pursue the fundamental issue of Motorola’s broken promise,” Microsoft stated. Motorola, in return, wants fair compensation. All this over certain video-compression software used in Windows 7 and Xbox. Try harder, Motorola.
