Play DVD movies in Windows 10 without paying $15 for the first-party app

We recently learned that Windows 10 will not be able to play DVDs out-of-the-box, but Microsoft isn’t exactly leaving people out to dry here either. For those upgrading from Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 with Media Center, Microsoft will send out a Windows update that includes its first-party Windows DVD Player app.
Those who do a clean install of Windows 10 or upgrade from Windows 8.1 without Media Center will need to download the Windows DVD Player app from the Windows Store to play their DVDs. The problem, the app isn’t free and costs a rather expensive $15. The good news is that this is Windows we’re talking about, and you can install any application you like on it for free, including one that can play DVDs.
Our personal favorite is VLC Media Player, but if you have another favorite, chances are, it will still work after upgrading to Windows 10. So really, there’s nothing to worry about.
