In an internal memo, Microsoft has announced that longtime executive Craig Mundie will leave his post as the Cheif Research and Strategy Officer and take a new role within the company, as he approaches retirement in 2014. His new role? Senior Advisor to CEO Steve Ballmer.

“In this role, he works on key strategic projects within the company, as well as with government and business leaders around the world on technology policy, regulation and standards,” Microsoft stated in an updated biography for Craig Mundie on the company’s website. Mundie’s former responsibilities will be given to Eric Rudder, who will oversee the Microsoft Research division and other technical strategies. Mundie is set for retirement when he turns 65 in 2014. “Over his career, Craig has brought great value to the groups and initiatives he has started and overseen and now brings that wealth of experience to his new role. Craig has also been instrumental in building relationships with governments and policymakers around the world,” CEO Steve Ballmer stated in an internet memo.
