Microsoft details Internet Explorer 11's HTML5 video and audio support in Windows Phone 8.1

With Windows Phone 8.1, Microsoft brought a slew of new and handy features to the mobile operating system. The new features included the voice assistant Cortana, improved keyboard Word Flow, and Notification Center. In addition, the default browser Internet Explorer also had snagged a major update bringing lots of new features on board. Microsoft is now offering us a glimpse of some of the key features of IE11.

The new browser comes with full support for HTML5 video and audio. This allows users to play videos natively inside the browser without having to install any external media plugins or utilize any HTML5 media element events. Similarly, the browser also supports HTML5 audio, which makes it possible to use HTML5 audio with games or interactive Web apps, even for devices with memory as low as 512MB RAM.

Additionally, Internet Explorer 11 for Windows Phone also supports in-line video and features Fullscreen API. This allows the browser to display other content available on the web page while a user is playing a video. The Fullscreen API enables the browser to view any video embedded on a web page in full screen mode.

Internet Explorer 11 for Windows supports ‘Closed Captioning’ on videos. This feature is also available for Windows Phone 8.1. Microsoft notes that these improvements to HTML5 audio and video will, in addition to the web browser, also work with web apps.
