Revenge porn has once again been making headlines following the Reddit fiasco that’s been happening lately. Earlier this year, Reddit started taking stricter measures against content that is “outside of its values”, including revenge porn, and following the resignation of CEO Ellen Pao, Reddit will now be doubling down on other controversial areas.
Now, Microsoft has also pledged to take a firm stance on revenge porn, with the goal of “putting victims back in control”. Because of its severely damaging nature, victims who have had intimate images and videos of them posted online by their ex’s without their consent for the world to see will now be able to have that content swiftly removed from any Microsoft service that it is hosted on, such as OneDrive or Xbox Live.
“…our hope is that by helping to address requests and to remove these extremely personal photos and videos from our services, we can better support victims as they work to re-claim their privacy, and help to push just a little further in the fight against this despicable practice.” – Microsoft
The software giant has developed a new reporting web page that is designed to tackle revenge porn. Now only available in English with more languages to be added in the coming weeks. Microsoft however stresses that more effort is needed from the public and private sectors to ensure better protection from this kind of defamation.
