Microsoft has today confirmed via an event in France that “Windows 9”, the next major version of the company’s operating system is coming soon. Alain Crozier, President of Microsoft France said today “Last year, we were with a Windows 8 release, in a few hours, a few days we will release our new OS, Windows 9” [Google Translate], so does this mean Microsoft has officially confirmed the name “Windows 9”? Not necessarily.

Nicolas Petit, director of Marketing and Operations within Microsoft France corrected Croziers statement by saying “We look forward to seeing you in late September, in San Francisco, for the future of Windows, which actually at this stage does not have a name as such.” This seems like a really awful cover-up on Microsoft’s behalf, however there could be some truth to it.

Internally, Microsoft refer to Windows Threshold as Windows 9, whether Windows 9 ends up being the public name for the operating system remains to be seen, but there’s still a chance. Microsoft may opt to name Windows 9 something completely different, but considering internally Windows 9 is being used by everyone, it seems likely that Windows 9 will ultimately be the name seen on shelves.

Microsoft is set to release a public preview of Windows 9 in early October for Enterprises and Enthusiasts to test. September 30 will see the company talk about what’s new whilst giving journalists a first look at what’s coming in Windows 9.

What do you think? Should Microsoft name the next version of Windows, Windows 9 or should Microsoft go a different rout? Leave us your thoughts below.
