Microsoft is said to announce a version of its flagship operating system, Windows, for ARM Chips at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show (CES) event this January.

According to Bloomberg, this version of Windows will be made specifically for battery-powered devices such as tablet computers and other handhelds. Details are scarce as this is being labeled confidential by Microsoft employees for the time being.

These chips are used in most smartphones out in the market today including the Apple iPad. But what are ARM Chips and what do they have to do with Microsoft? Microsoft is trying to attack and overpower the tablet and smartphone market by creating a Windows version that utilizes ARM Chips.

Only time will tell if Microsoft can use this new venture to boost their standing in the tablet and smartphone market. There are already talks about a tablet-friendly version of Windows being released in the near future.

What are your thoughts? Do you think Microsoft has the ability to take the lead in the tablet and smartphone market? What is delaying them?
