After evaluating different options, Leon County school district in Tallahassee, Florida, has made a clear choice in choosing the operating system that offers them the most flexibility. The county has selected Windows 8 for its 34,000 students during the 2013-2014 school year.
Bill Nimmons, IT Director of Leon County Schools, mentioned that they wanted an operating system that would minimize the additional training by their teachers and students, allowing them to use existing curriculum and apps without limitations. Windows 8 allowed them to do just that.
The county has also selected Office 365 over Google Apps. Carlos Fernandez, Coordinator of Instructional Technology at Leon County Schools, says, “We wanted to make sure that the tools were familiar to our teachers but were also relevant to students. We wanted to use the proper tools, like Microsoft Office, like Office 365 and OneNote in collaboration with other web applications, so our students can get different flavors of content, interactivity, and engagement.”
Nimmons also mentioned that at Leon County school district believes in a successful one-to-one mobile learning program and it’s a crucial part of their vision. The county has also joined hands with other U.S. school districts who are focusing on one-to-one mobile learning paths, including the Miami-Dade Public School District, West Virginia Department of Education, Chester County School District, Fresno Unified School District, Baltimore County School District, and Houston Independent School District.
