If you like the Surface Pro 3’s tiny and compact form factor but wished it ran the Android operating system, some former Google employees have made that happen. Called the Remix ultra-tablet, the device resembles the Surface Pro 3 and packs an impressive set of specifications.
The resemblance is so uncanny that you can’t give these people, who used to work at Google AdWords, Maps and other Google divisions any benefit of the doubt. From the design to marketing strategy, it is evident what device is being ripped off here. (Editor’s note: How about a flip side of the coin.. what’s wrong with more Surface-like products in the market?)
As for the specifications, the Remix ultra-tablet sports a 11.6-inch display with 1920×1080 pixels resolution. It is powered by a 1.8GHz Nvidia Tegra 4+1 A15 processor, 2GB RAM, and 16GB/64GB flash storage. On the camera front, it sports 5-megapixel camera both at the front and back. It supports 2.4 and 5GHz 802.11 a/b/g/n, and packs in 8,100mAh battery.
The tablet also comes with a kickstand, which too is shamelessly copied from Surface Pro 3’s design. The device also features a keyboard that “clicks in” — it is a magnetically attached keyboard cover that does the job of a touchpad as well as screen protector. It also features a proprietary magnetic charging port.
The device runs on Remix OS, a custom Android build built over Android 4.4.2. In addition to the stock Android features, it also offers an app-switching taskbar, and windowed apps. About those windowed apps, there is an email client that looks exactly like the Windows 8.1 email client.
“It’s easy to see it in our hardware, but you’ll truly get it through our software. Remix OS is a customized version of Android that merges the productivity functions and habits you’re used to on PCs, while keeping the simplicity you’ve come to expect from a tablet. True mobile productivity, the definition of an ultra-tablet,” the product description states.
Priced at $449 for the 64GB model and $349 for 16GB unit, the device will first go on sale in China and eventually arrive at US and UK.
Take a look at the interface below. Does it look similar? You can also watch the promo video below where this device is touted as “one device for both work and play.”
