Right on schedule Windows 10 started rolling out around the world. Being in the Pacific Time zone I was able to start the process a couple of hours before July 29th, since the Windows 10 upgrades became available in the US at midnight Eastern Standard Time. At 9:07 PM PDT my Dell XPS 13 notified me it was finally time.
After clicking “Start the upgrade now,” the update began virtually the exact same process any Windows Insider would be familiar with.
In all it took about 30 minutes to upgrade the operating system. And Window 10 booted up with no problems.
All of my Dell drivers worked perfectly right from the beginning, something that never happened for me on any of the Windows Insider builds. I was quickly able to setup Cortana and activate her “Hey Cortana” feature, although Windows 10 did notify me that there may be problems because my laptop’s microphone wasn’t designed for Hey Cortana. But after testing a few commands, even from across the room, she didn’t miss a beat.
I then spent a little time reorganizing the start menu and making sure I had all my apps downloaded, especially the my free copy of Minecraft Windows 10 Edition beta, Groove Music, and Twitter’s new universal app. All of my older Windows programs were there and started up just fine, and Groove Music carried over my Xbox Music collection without a problem.
The only complaint in setting it up was looking for settings could result in more work than necessary because they could either be divided into the old Control Panel or the new Settings menu, but it isn’t really a problem because you can always find whatever setting you need by simply typing into the Search Box.
All in all, from the time I clicked “Start the upgrade now” to the time I had finished customizing the Start Menu, Cortana, and Edge, took me a little over an hour. With a rollout this big, and one that is supposed to break records for internet traffic, I’m sure it won’t be flawless and unfortunately hiccups are bound to happen.
