Hotmail Mobile usage spikes thanks to Apple iOS 5

Microsoft is proud to announce that mobile usage of its Hotmail service has exploded in the past few weeks, and guess who is to thank? Apple! More than 2 million Apple users linked their Hotmail accounts to their iPhones and iPads since the launch of iOS 5.

“Since the release of iOS 5, more than 2 million customers have connected Hotmail to iPhones or iPads, and we’re just getting started—almost 100,000 new iOS 5 devices are being set up with Hotmail every day,” Microsoft stated in an official blog post.

As you can see from the chart above, most of Hotmail’s users on iOS 5 come from the iPhone 4 with 60%. 25% of Hotmail iOS 5 connections come from the new iPhone 4S. 12% of Hotmail connections come from the iPhone 3GS. The chart also shows that 15% of Hotmail connections come from iPads.

Google, on the other hand, is playing catch-up to Microsoft. Google released its official Gmail app for the iOS, but the attempt was premature. Right when the app was released, it had to be pulled due to a bug. Critics are even against the Gmail iPhone app interface claiming that it was just a boring skin.
