Hands on: Microsoft Universal Foldable Keyboard (with video)

Microsoft Universal Foldable Keyboard folded

Many users have devices on multiple operating systems. The Microsoft Universal Foldable Keyboard is a thin and light keyboard that can easily switch between iOS, Android, and Windows devices. This makes it easy to jump between the various devices a person may have on their desk. In our hands on video we show how to pair the device and switch between different devices as well as show some size comparisons to other Microsoft devices.

The Microsoft Universal Foldable Keyboard takes quite a few design queues from the Surface Type Cover and has a similar feel. Typing is smooth and springy but the keys don’t travel far when typing so if you’re used to a full keyboard there will be an adjustment period. Additionally, the gap in the middle, which allows the keyboard to fold, forces you to type correctly. In the past I’ve cheated by typing the letter “y” with my left index finger but you have to use proper form on this device.

Microsoft Universal Foldable Keyboard and Surface Type Cover

The keyboard is amazingly thin coming in at only 5mm. I’d guess that this is about as thin as you can make a keyboard without completely overhauling the design like the Surface Touch Cover did. While I didn’t test this myself, it’s also advertised as spill-resistant. When folded, the device is small enough to fit in a large pocket and would easily fit into a small bag.

To pair the device you just press and hold either the “1” or “2” that are in boxes above the row of numbers. These buttons can be used to save two devices to memory so you can jump between them. Since the keyboard works across three different operating systems it can be switched between different keyboard configurations using a button in the upper right hand corner of the keyboard.

Pairing the Microsoft Universal Foldable Keyboard

I found pairing and using the device to be extremely easy. I have used the Surface Type Cover as my primary keyboard for over a year so there isn’t as steep of a learning curve for me but the Microsoft Universal Foldable Keyboard is a solid device and a nice addition to Microsoft’s line of keyboards. In addition to this quick hands on, we also have a full review. The Microsoft Universal Foldable Keyboard can be found on Microsoft.com for $99.95 and Amazon.com for $85.61.
