According to new stats from StatCounter, Google’s Chrome browser is the world’s most popular browser beating out Microsoft’s Internet Explorer browser. This data comes after Chrome had barely beat Internet Explorer only to lose again after one day.
For the first time ever, Google’s Chrome browser has taken over Internet Explorer as the world’s most popular browser. As of May 20th, Google Chrome has a 32.76% market share compared to Microsoft’s 31.94%. Not that long ago, it was revealed that Chrome was popular only on weekends. “Whether Chrome can take the lead in the browser wars in the long term remains to be seen, however the trend towards Chrome usage at weekends is undeniable. At weekends, when people are free to choose what browser to use, many of them are selecting Chrome in preference to Internet Explorer.” So does this mean bad news for the “browser of choice?”
According to Microsoft, StatCounter bases its findings on faulty data and incorrect assumptions. The results are flawed because the rankings dont take into account that Google’s Chrome browser pre-renders certain pages assuming the user would go there next, even if it is never viewed. Microsoft also believes that StatCounter doesn’t accurately geoweight “browser usage based on real-world Internet populations.” Microsoft also stated that StatCounter needs to count unique visitors and not page views.
