Minecraft on PC has traditionally been available to download in two separate editions known as the Java Edition and the Bedrock Edition. That is set to change on June 7 however, when the two versions will become one with the new Minecraft Java and Bedrock Edition.
You may be wondering what the difference is between the current iterations of Java and Bedrock. While Java is exclusive to PC, Mac and Linux systems, the Bedrock Edition is available on PC, mobile (Android, iOS, Windows 10 mobile and Windows Phone, etc) and on numerous consoles including Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and so on.
Java is considered the more flexible version of Minecraft on PC in terms of modding, though that version doesn’t allow for cross-platform play. Also, the Java Edition has a higher performance ceiling and tends to look a little better on higher-end gaming PCs, while the Bedrock Edition is designed to play smoothly, and generally features shorter load times.
Will Minecraft Java and Bedrock Edition manage to combine the best of both worlds when it rolls out on June 7? Either way, the move to merge PC Minecraft into a single version of the game will make things a little less confusing for fans. Owners of either the Java or Bedrock editions will see it automatically updated to the new version with no further purchases needed.
