For students and teachers to have a great school year: Top ten Back to School apps for Windows 8.1

For those of you with a shiny new Windows 8.1 PC or mobile device, having the right apps makes all the difference. Teachers and students alike can make the best of their new Windows 8.1 device by having our top ten apps to help make the school year better and more productive than ever.

We’ve highlighted the ten apps that are available in Microsoft’s Back to School collection, available in the Windows Store. That particular collection contains roughly 30 apps, but I condensed the list to my top ten favorite.

Of these apps, my favorite ones include Khan Academy, which is a fantastic resource and encompasses a wealth of information, along with TeacherKit, which is a gorgeous app that lets teachers keep track of students and classes. Other personal favorite apps include Flashcards Pro, which helps me memorize what I need to know, and My Study Life, which allows me to keep track of my entire school itinerary.

• Khan Academy (free) – This app is the best way to view Khan Academy’s complete library of over 6000 videos on your Windows device. It covers a massive number of topics, including K-12 math, science topics such as biology, chemistry, and physics, and even the humanities with tutorials on finance and history.

• Encyclopedia Britannica (free) – Over 80,000 articles, tens of thousands of images, diagrams, and charts, as well as the ability to store your favorites and access your search history. Free to download with limited content available. Unlimited content available with a $14.99 (USD) annual subscription.

• My Study Life (free) – A planner for students, teachers and lecturers designed to make your study life easier. My Study Life allows you to store your timetable, homework and exams in the cloud making it available on any device, wherever you are.

• OneNote (free) – Microsoft OneNote is your digital notebook for keeping track of what’s important in your life. Jot down your ideas, keep track of classroom and meeting notes, clip from the web, and make a to-do list, as well as draw and sketch your ideas. OneNote is your one place to capture and organize everything.

• TeacherKit (free) – TeacherKit is a simple and intuitive interface that enables teachers to track attendance, manage their students and classes.

• Binder (free) – Take charge of your learning experience! Binder is your personalized and interactive document reader that lets you view, organize, annotate and share your digital documents from virtually anywhere – it even works offline.

• Dictionary. (free) – Get the power of TheFreeDictionary.com, the world’s most comprehensive dictionary. Search multiple English dictionaries, including an offline dictionary, all from the most trusted sources, plus specialty dictionaries, including Medical, Legal, Financial, Acronyms, and Idioms, as well as multiple encyclopedias and even Wikipedia.

• myHomework (free) – myHomework is a planner app that helps students stay organized on Windows and their other devices.

• Flashcards Pro (free) – Learn languages, use text to speech for audio based learning, help kids to learn alphabets and vocabulary, prepare for competitive exams, improve memory, and much more.

• Periodic Table (free) – The Periodic Table app contains detailed chemical and physical information of all chemical elements. Spice up your chemistry on Windows 8.1!
