News Highlights – May 2011

This month has come to a close and has brought us a ton of Microsoft related news especially about the company’s Windows operating system and Office productivity suite. Lets take a moment to reflect back at the 10 most popular news headlines that kept us on the edge of our seats for the month of May 2011.

Intel to Build Next Generation Processor for iOS devices?
It looks like Apple will be using Intel as a main processor manufacturer to power the iPad, iPod touch, and the iPhone. Apple, who currently uses Samsung, will focus on making a switch to Intel within a year.

Windows 7’s malware infection rate climbs, XP’s falls
Microsoft released data showcasing that Windows 7’s malware infection rate has climbed by more than 30% during the second half of 2010, while the infection rate for Windows XP has dropped by more than 20%.

Microsoft launches new PC vs. Mac site
Microsoft is attempting to stem the continuous growth of Mac computer sales with the launch of a new PC vs. Mac site. The site, targeted at Canadian buyers, asks users to “do the math” before selecting their next computer.

Microsoft Home Tour
Ever since it opened in 1994, the Microsoft Home has been a place that explores the potential of technology in the home in the foreseeable future. Steve Clayton and Flora Goldthwaite give a tour of the Microsoft Home and the connected experiences and devices that it offers.

Microsoft Security Essentials Not All That Great?
In a recent test from AV-Test, Microsoft’s popular and free antivirus program, Security Essentials, received a very poor score. Security Essentials scored second to last in a test that tested 22 different anti-virus programs.

Windows 8 to be released in 2013?
Reports are indicating that Microsoft’s next generation operating system, Windows 8, will be released in 2013. We might even see a beta during PDC which takes place this September.

Google Launches Chromebook, Takes on Microsoft and Apple
Google unveiled during its annual I/O conference the first ever “Chromebook” notebooks. These notebooks will go on sale in June and will be powered by Google’s Chrome operating system and will have laptops made by manufacturers such as Samsung and Acer.

Windows 8 M3 Build 7959 Leaked
Yet another leak in the Windows 8 arena. This time, we get to see a Milestone 3 Build 7959 of Windows 8. Unlike the recent two builds that were leaked, 7850 and 7955, this new leaked build is 64bit and a server version of the operating system.

NSA: Forget Windows XP, migrate to Windows 7
The National Security Agency, responsible for protecting United States government communications and information systems, has released a informational datasheet advising Windows XP users to migrate to Windows Vista or Windows 7 as soon as possible.

Office 15 Build 15.0.2703.1000 Screenshots Leaked
Yet another leak in the Office 15 front. This time we get to see screenshots of build 15.0.2703.1000. These new images give us an idea on what to expect on Microsoft’s next update to its popular software productivity suite.
