162,840 total apps in the Windows Store and the top Windows 8.1 apps as of May 25th

It’s Sunday, May 25th, and its time to take a look at the Windows Store, which is home to both Windows 8.1 and Windows RT apps. Let’s take a look at the total app count, which apps are at the top of the charts, and highlight some new apps for our readers. Lets begin!

There are now 162,840 apps in the Windows Store, worldwide. The top-five free apps in the United States are Facebook, Asphalt 8 Airborne, Flappy Bird, Skype, and Netflix. The top-five paid apps are Plex, Wheel of Fortune, Skateboard Party 2, Halo Spartan Assault, and KVADPhoto+ Pro. The top-five trending apps are Maleficent Free Fall, Snap Attack, Microsoft Treasure Hunt, Checkers Deluxe, and Parking Frenzy.

Recently, Microsoft highlighted the Windows Store trends as of May 2014 and found that Social was the most-downloaded category in the Windows Store. Microsoft has begun to see apps submitted to both stores that take advantage of the new universal apps paradigm, built using Visual Studio. Microsoft is also seeing an increase in developers linking their Windows and Windows Phone apps in both stores for better awareness.

Let’s take a look at some of these apps below.

Maleficent Free Fall

Maleficent Free Fall (free) – “From the creators of Disney’s #1 hit game Frozen Free Fall comes an all-new match 3 puzzle-adventure, Maleficent Free Fall! Inspired by Disney’s epic live-action film Maleficent, you’ll embark on a spectacular journey with exciting and challenging objectives like you have never seen before!” the app description reads.

This free app is currently trending in the Windows Store. The app is simple – simply switch and slide the board of enchanted gemstones to create matches of 3 or more as you trigger cascading combos and conquer original objectives.
